Review: Bad Milo

bad miloYou know that feeling you get after you eat way too much Taco Bell? Well that's what Duncan (Ken Marino) feels all the time. He's lived his whole life with severe intestinal unrest, and lately it's gotten a lot worse. With a wife (Gillian Jacobs) desperate for a baby and an inconsiderate boss (Patrick Warburton) forcing him to fire his co-workers, Duncan is feeling more stress than his bowels can handle. He starts seeing a wackjob psychiatrist (Peter Stormare) in hopes of finding the spiritual source of Duncan's stress. What they find is unbelievable: Duncan has a small demon living in his intestines, and every now and then the little creature escapes from his rear end and eats Duncan's enemies.

Needless to say, "Bad Milo" is an odd movie. Writer-director Jacob Vaughan, editor of many of the Duplass brothers films, found inspiration for this bizarre tale from his own irritable bowel experiences. I guess inspiration can truly strike anywhere, from anything. Vaughan smartly doesn't attempt to make a straight horror film, as the premise is too comical in its own right. The downside here is that the comedy is pretty one-note and easy. Milo is a gross-yet-cute creature, but he doesn't have much else going on other than being a butt demon.

The entire cast acts as appropriately as you can imagine in a movie about a butt demon. It's all very hokey and meant to be fun, but one gets the sense that you're watching a group of friends make a movie that only THEY understand. "Bad Milo" is ideal to watch with a group of friends that love preposterous movies. The gross-out moments are gross, it's completely ridiculous, and it's over in a brisk 85 minutes. It doesn't achieve "Gremlins" status - which it feels like it's aiming for - but it's fine enough for a viewing with a large (drunk) group.
